It has been four years since the tragic events of May 2009 where tens of thousands of people lost their lives in Sri Lanka. Many Tamil Canadians, including some living in our city lost members of their families, relatives and friends during those violent days. We, the undersigned, remembered the victims who lost their lives and those who were maimed during the dark days that ended in May 2009.

We declared a week of remembrance for the victims to be observed between May 11, 2013 and May 18, 2013 to mark this tragic part of our history. We would like to inform that the declaration of the week of remembrance has been ended as of yesterday, May 18, 2013. We would like to extend our sincere thanks for those of you who observed the remembrance week.

During this week we organized a remembrance event. We would like to thank those of you who attended the May 2009 Remembrance Prayer event on May 14, 2013, jointly organized by the National Capital Region Tamil Association, the Ottawa Tamil Cultural Association, the Ottawa Tamil Seniors Association, and the Ottawa Tamil Sangam. We had a great turn out and it was very touching to see the community's emotional connection with the event.

We were pleased by the presence of Hon. Paul Dewar, Member of Parliament (Ottawa Centre), participating in the May 2009 Remembrance Prayer event and speaking to the attendees.

You can view the the pictures of May 2009 Remembrance Prayer by clicking here or on any of the thumbnails below.

We would also like to thank the Mayor of Ottawa for the proclamation of the week of May 11, 2013 to May 18, 2013 as a week of remembrance for war victims in Sri Lanka.

Please preserve your May 2009 Remembrance Button for the future use. We asked and encouraged our members and the fellow citizens of this city to wear the button during the remembrance week as a sign of remembrance.

Let us never forget what happened to our people during this tragic part of our history that ended in May 2009. This will be a constant reminder for us to help them in their struggle to recover from this tragedy and to do whatever possible to prevent this from happening again.

MARAVOMEY MAY 2009!
LEST WE FORGET MAY 2009!
