May 2017 marks the 8th anniversary of the very tragic and traumatic events that took place in Sri Lanka. Leading up to May 19, 2009, tens of thousands of people lost their lives. Many Tamil Canadians, including the Tamils living in our city, lost family members during the violent events which has left a painful indelible scar in our hearts. During the month of May every year from 2009, all Tamils world over remember with deep sorrow the victims who lost their lives and those who were maimed during this dark period in our history.
A WEEK OF REMEMBRANCE - MAY 11th to MAY 18th
Jointly we are declaring a week of remembrance for the victims to be observed between May 11, 2017 and May 18, 2017 to mark this tragic part of our history.
REMEMBRANCE EVENT - SATURDAY, MAY 13, 2017
To mark the event this year, we will hold a solemn day of reflection to acknowledge the suffering the people endured. We request our fellow Tamils to join us to collectively light candles, lay flowers, and to give back with a pledge of cash donation in memory of all those who have lost their lives. Let us come out in large numbers and make a meaningful contribution to our fellow Tamils in Sri Lanka. (Learn more)
